And you don't want to spend an age pulling it together D ressing for the office is a pain in the association. You want to give the impression that you are well-paid but not over-paid. You want to look current without giving away the fact that you spend the day flicking secretly through fashion mags. (I've said too much.) And you don't want to spend an age pulling it all together. That's all well and good, but when you wake up on Monday morning, there is a good chance that all you'll have to put on is what you wore on Friday, nicely bundled in a heap near the washing basket. We spend more time in our workwear than any other items of clothing, yet most of us give it very little thought until after we have finished our first cup of coffee. The trouble is, office clothes, by their very nature, are quite blah. And about as appealing to shop for as a coffin. But here's my paint-by-numbers shopping list for your officewear that will keep you looking fresh all the way to next summer - providing you actually manage to hit the washing basket target every so often. 1. A well-fitting, knee-length skirt. Get something that doesn't make too much of an impact: that way you can wear it two or three times in a week without garnering pitying looks. Go for something grey or navy. 2. A super-sharp blazer. Even if your office doesn't have a particularly fascistic dress code, a blazer will sharpen up a pair of jeans. It will also turn an evening dress into an office staple. Just remember to roll up the sleeves and leave it unbuttoned. 3. A crisp white shirt. Yawn, I know, but get a well-tailored one with a bit of detail, say, by Donna Karan, and this will be your best friend on bleary-eyed mornings. 4. A great pair of trousers. By great I mean well-fitting, easy to wear (with heels or brogues), and smart enough to dress down with a T-shirt. Something with a bit of volume around the hips and subtle tapering down the leg in a suit fabric is ideal. 5. A selection of polo necks, well-cut T-shirts and long-sleeve tops. All these can be dressed up with some well-placed jewellery. 7. A blouse. The thing about a blouse is that, unlike a shirt, it comes with built-in femininity. Go for a pretty, colourful version to add a bit of a pop and keep the neckline interesting with a pussy bow (see Nicole Farhi) or a puffed up shoulder (Stella McCartney). You may notice I didn't include a dress. It's not because they are unfashionable: it's because they make too much of an impact. If you can't wear it on Friday because you wore it on Monday, what's the point? Lazy, moi? Email niamh.o' THE SOLE OF RECESSION CHIC Since this recession lark hit hard, we have been rediscovering some long-forgotten oldies but goodies. Of course, what I mean by that is we have been forced to reacquaint ourselves with the less-than-generous clothing budgets we last negotiated in our teens. So it is great to see the brilliant Autumn/Winter collection from Shoe Rack - the store every teenager ends up buying their Debs shoes in. For around the same price as a week's supply of lattes, you can pick up some seriously trendy shoes including a pair of dangerously studded ankle boots, sexy platforms, easy-peasy pumps and knee-high boots. Hmm, teenagers these days have it too good. Franck Muller Replica DESIGNER DIALECT Word of the week: Fashifice. Definition: The sacrifice of one's comfort in the name of style.
