You can't drive to work in it, it won't make your replacement led light bulbs breakfast, it won't make you slimmer, or more beautiful. So why are ordinary women, not just Hollywood stars (they get given them for free), prepared to spend upwards of pounds 1,000 on a handbag? One school of thought is that we can't afford the haute couture - the dresses, the coats etc so we buy the accessories. Not only are these cheaper but a logo handbag from Louis Vuitton spells out "I buy designer" much better than a cotton shift dress from Alberta Feretti ever would, unless you regularly appear in celebrity magazines. However this theory falls down when you consider handbag prices are now edging into the stratosphere. This season one particularly pretty piece Brass Rings of Jimmy Choo arm candy, the Ross, pictured right, retails at pounds 1,250 while Alexander McQueen's Novak bag comes in at upwards of pounds 999. And no matter how much you spend on the bag, a season later it's not worth its weight in leather. It devalues even faster if the wrong footballer's wife/Page Three girl is seen carrying it. Overnight your must-have tote is condemned to the bottom of the wardrobe that time forgot. For the sensible-minded of us handbag longing remains a longing, We can't possibly justify blowing a month's salary on a Hermes Birkin (in fact we can't even get on the waiting list). But we can now enjoy the fab feeling of being seen with this season's must-have bag at least once thanks to a new handbag library.
